This month's club in the spotlight

BVMA Brisbane

Check out their website.

The Federation of Australian Movie Makers Limited is the umbrella organisation for many of this country's independent and non-commercial movie makers. As a non-profit organisation, FAMM Ltd has guided and assisted the activities of members in many ways and continues to do so. To learn more about FAMM Ltd and its activities, select an option from the menus at the top.

FAMM Ltd. doesn't actually make movies, rather FAMM Ltd. is a representative organisation. If you are looking for a movie/video club, group or organisation, select the state you reside in from the "Clubs" drop down menu above.

News Summary

Using this site.

This site is designed to be viewable by W3C standards-compatible browsers using HTML 4.01 (transitional). On a PC, this translates to Internet Explorer (6, 5 or 4), Netscape Navigator (7 or 6. Version 4.5 should work but I don't recommend it), Opera 5 and Mozilla 1.0. On a Mac, Internet Explorer 5, Navigator 6 (Version 4.7 works but doesn't render the pages well) and Mozilla 1.0. Opera 6 (beta) for Mac works just fine. (note: there are versions of Opera for Mac, Windows, Linux, OS/2, Solaris, Symbian, QNX and FreeBSD operating systems. That must cover everyone. Sorry Amiga.) I can't really recommend iCab for Mac at this stage.

The pages have been designed to be viewable at a screen resolution of 800 x 600 pixels or greater, so a 15" monitor should be fine.

In addition, it would be useful to have the following:

  • Adobe Acrobat reader. Download it for free from Adobe (Windows, Macintosh, Unix). Some downloadable documents here are in Acrobat format
  • Quicktime 6. Download it for free from Apple (Windows, Macintosh). Some online movie clips may be made available here in the MPEG-4 format, and Quicktime provides the most reliable and standards-compliant way of viewing them.
  • Flash 6. Download it for free from Macromedia (Windows, Macintosh). No Flash content is planned at the moment, but you should always be prepared.

Where possible, the links provided are to the full installers rather than the Net-based installers which are a huge pain. Having these three applications/plug-ins should cover just about everything you are likely to encounter on the entire Internet. Except for Real audio/video files.

Some of these apps can be sizable downloads via modem, so remember that they are often available on the CD-ROMs that come with many computer magazines, such as MacFormat or Australian PC User.
